Machu Picchu

(Machu Picchu, Peru, 24-25th of October 2017)

As we decided to get to Machu Pichi the ”comfortable way” we started with taking a taxi to the train station right outside the city center in Cusco. The train then took 3,5 hours and the ride took us between high mountains and along beautiful rivers.

When we arrived in Aguas Calientes, the very compact village just below Machu Picchu, it wasn´t difficult to find our hotel. The town is small, just 3 roads wide, and our hotel was situated in the middle of it, on the same road as the buses to Machu Picchu.

Aguas Calientes is a very touristy town and everything is about going to Machu Picchu. The prices are high and the souvenirs are many. We bought a bus ticket for the morning bus to Machu Picchu and were told to be there at 4.30 in the morning, at the latest.

When we came out from our hotel at 4.15 in the morning we were met by a really long queue of people and we thought we would not get on the first buses.

But somehow it was all very well planned as more than 10 buses arrived at the same time to take us up to the top. And most of us got to the entrance of Machu Picchu when they opened at 6 am.

We had read on internet that you need to have a guide to be able to get in to Machu Picchu. You do not! There are guides but they just offer trips, they do not force anybody to join. We passed the guides and got into the area among the first people.

We took some amazing pictures and it was amazing to see the ruins without any other people disturbing the views.

After an hour we walked up to the entrance of the Machu Picchu mountain, a place from where the views over Machu Picchu are supposed to be stunning. It was a hard walk!!

We walked upwards for 2 kilometers – in total 600 height meters. It was steep and high steps all the way to the top.. Some nice pictures were taken and then we headed back down again.

Our train back to Cusco departed in the late afternoon and by 9 pm we were back at hour nice hotel in the Centre of Cusco.
